ABOUT US

Foothill Progressive Montessori School was founded in January of 1984 by Mrs. Padmini Joseph along with her partner Ms. Kanthi De Silva. They both had been teachers for many years and felt that starting their own school would give them more control over what they taught the children. They felt strongly about using the Montessori system as the basic building blocks of a holistic education.

The original school started with just 12 students, ranging in age from 5-12 years, and operated out of the Foothill Intermediate School premises. In the summer of the same year a preschool was opened at the same location.

1994 the preschool moved to a new custom built facilitiy on Houseman Street and the kindergarten and elementary school to 4526 Indianola Way in 1995. In 2005 the elementary school expanded into a successful middle school. The school now operates through a number of other schools including Altadena Progressive Montessori & Flintridge Montessori school.

The school aims to promote strong academic and social skills in children together with consideration for others, physical fitness, music & dance, . Emphasis is placed in developing well rounded children who can go on to become culturally aware, sensitive and productive citizens who can make the world a better place. In fact many of our students have gone on to achieve great success, won essay competitions, have excelled academically having scored over 85% on their Scholastic Aptitude Tests to receive the Presidents gold and silver awards. In 2011, 18 students out of a total of 49 scored over 95% and were eligible to sit for the John Hopkins talented youth exam.
