Foothill Progressive Montessori
Elementary School was founded in January
of 1984 by Mrs. Padmini Joseph. In the summer of the same year the
pre-school was opened with Ms. Kanthi De Silva acting as Director
and partner at the school.
The
original school was a one-room school house, and started with 12 students ranging in age from
5-10 years It was housed at Foothill Intermediate School in La
Canada.
In
1994 the preschool moved to a brand new purpose built building
on Houseman street, while in 1995 the elementary school moved to Indionola
Way. The school then expanded
into a number of other schools including Pasadena Progressive Montessori,
and Flintridge Montessori School.
Using the Montessori system from the age of 2 years to grade 3, the
school aims to develop in children a love of learning while at the
same time fostering in them an appreciation of the importance of
relating to others in a kind and considerate way. From grade 3,
children attending the school follow the curriculum taught in
mainstream schools.
When children
leave the school, they leave with an appreciation of music, dance,
the arts and humanities, the sciences, and the academic and social
skills necessary to achieve great success. Many of the children who
have left Foothill Progressive Montessori School have won
prestigious essay writing competitions for companies like the Disney
Entertainment Corporation in Hollywood.
