ART

The art program is a concept-based sequential curriculum that integrates the disciplines of art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and art production.

The program is designed to facilitate the development of interests in learning to understand, appreciate, and create works of art. Central to this approach is the focus on content that is derived from a broad range of visual arts with an emphasis on what can be learned from studying different works of art.

The art program is aligned with the core curriculum. This means that art is not taught as an isolated activity, but one that is integral to human experience. Students develop their communication, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills through written, oral, and visual expression.

The elementary and middle school art program includes skill development in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and crafts. These are skills that can be beneficial to your child in a variety of ways such as designing a brochure on the computer to impress their college admission interviewer with their knowledge of desk top publishing and design skills.

Art is all around us and has a significant impact on our daily life, so an early appreciation of art and how to use it in a positive practical way that can make a significant difference in the life of the student.

Children are taught to:

  • Realize the need for art education, art history and art appreciation.
  • Define the meaning of art education, art appreciation and art.
  • Identify the characteristics and psychological effects of line, form, shape, space, texture, color and value.
  • Develop techniques in drawing lines and creating line textures.
  • Acquire skills in drawing geometrical forms and color charts.
  • Select good textures and match similar ones.
  • Select and apply good color combinations in drawings, pictures, dress, etc.
  • Develop one's aesthetic sense and sense of beauty
  • Develop the ability to perceive or recognize the true color of objects.
  • Acquire the ability to recognize and make balanced compositions.
