PRESCHOOL
PROGRAM
Children
start at our preschool between the age 2-5 years.. While we recommend
a full time program (5 days) to gain the the greatest benefit for
your child, parents have the option of choosing a part time (a few
days per week) or half day program (morning only). At this age full
time in not critical, but it is important that parents drop off/pick
up their children at specific times. Well esablished routine is
the first step to developing a balanced child.
At
Foothill Progressive we start with developing social skills, concentration
and consideration for others. However whatever do we is done in
an atmposhere of fun, love and nurturing. Without this children
cannot develop creativity, imagination and the quest to learn.
Montessori
is simply a very effective teaching method, developed by an Italian
Doctor, Maria Montessori. One half of it uses very specialized tools
and equipment to teach children basic skills like concentration,
mathematical concepts, practical life exercises and more. It is
divided into different subject areas (Please see below for a description).
We
use incorporate good ideas from all teaching systems. Maria Montessori
herself constantly developed new tools, techniques and equipment.
We feel that we should carry on that tradition of innovation by
refining, developing and even expanding on her core concepts of
child development without losing sight of the basic Montessori philosophy.

Who
Was Maria Montessori?
Dottoressa
Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952) was born in Italy in 1870, and subsequently
became Italy’s first female doctor in 1896. At the age of
28 she became the director of a school for mentally disabled children.
She spent long hours at the school developing her own approach to
learning, and after two years, these children, who had formerly
been considered ineducable, took a school examination along with
normal children and passed successfully.
In
1907, she was presented the opportunity to apply her educational
theories to normal children. She was given the responsibility of
establishing a school—a day-care center—for the 50 children
living in an impoverished tenement building. The property’s
owner was tired of the children’s vandalism and offered Dr.
Montessori her first chance to set up her concept of what a child-centered
environment should be.
From
these early beginnings developed a method of education that has
spread around the world. In 1929 Dr. Montessori founded AMI (Association
Montessori Internationale) to establish and coordinate training
centers to authentically prepare teachers. Dr. Montessori, whose
legacy includes being nominated three times for the Nobel Peace
Prize, died in Holland in 1952, and today more than 4,000 schools
worldwide have adopted the Montessori method.
